The nights are getting warmer and the days are getting longer. It’s time for fun in Philly this summer, and what better way to take in the sights and sounds of the city than in your new Toyota vehicle? If you’re looking for fun things to do in the city this summer, here are some great ideas to get you started.
Run away and join the circus.
For those of you who have always wanted to be a lion tamer, take a shot at wearing clown shoes or fly through the air on a trapeze, now’s your chance. The Philadelphia School of Circus Arts -- a place where wannabe circus performers come to learn from miles around -- is the first place to go for your circus education. There are free performances throughout the summer, as well as circus classes for both kids and adults. The only question left to ask here is how many clowns CAN you fit into a Toyota?
Let the kids be kids.
Childhood should be a time of fun, excitement and lots and lots of laughter, and there’s no better place to be a kid than Philly this summer. Here are some of the highlights:
- Channel your inner Jasmine at Disney’s Aladdin Jr. Show at the Media Theater for the Performing Arts. Go soon because it’s only there until June 25th.
- Middle school kids have the chance to come and hang out with other children their age at an age appropriate dance party at Sesame Place. The only theme park in the country based on Sesame Street is inviting kids to attend the Friday Night Series. They can spend time with their friends, enter dance contests for cool prizes, and listen to the DJ play music all night while being totally supervised by the Sesame Place Security team.
- Don’t miss the Touch It museum, where kids of all ages can take steps into the nation’s past and delve into the life of early Americans. They can try out all sorts of tools and items that were held in the stores, parlors, and kitchens of homes and businesses from eras past. Kids can interact with museum exhibits, get involved in an interactive theater performance, and play, play, and play some more throughout the museum.

They're legendary. Like the Liberty Bell and the Phillies, Philadelphia cheese steaks are an American cultural icon. Originally invented in 1930 by Pat Olivieri, Pennsylvanians have been munching on these meaty, gooey sandwiches for almost 80 years. When you're out and about in Philly this summer, you'll want to take the family in for a meal fit for a king. Here are some great places to stop for lunch.
Dalessandro's in Roxborough
If you like your beef thinly sliced and finely chopped with a light roll you`ll love Dalessandro's in Roxborough. Known for extra greasy sandwiches and rumoured to season their grill with fat, these sandwiches are worth the drive and the line up.
Pat's King of Steaks
The Pat in Pat's King of Steaks is the original inventor of the cheese steak. This is the home of the original sandwich and it's frequented by celebrities, politicians, athletes and more. Open all day and night, this hot spot is known for your choice of cheese and a fast moving line. Indecisive customers hold up the line, so know what you want before you get there and be prepared to talk fast.
Here's a quick primer on how to order at Pat's. First, how many? Just give a number. Second, what kind of cheese? Cheez Whiz is a popular choice and is just called whiz. Third, do you want onions? Just say with or without. So if you want one sandwich with Cheez Whiz and onions, you say 'one wiz with' and get out of the way. Two of you who like provolone and don't like onions? 'Two provolone without' and you'll be snacking in no time.
Steaks on South
A comparative newcomer on the cheese steak scene, Steaks on South is turning the heads of even the toughest sandwich critics. Steaks on South is one of the only shops in Philly that lets you upgrade to tender rib eye steak and there are plenty of vegetarian options on the menu for the ones in your party who aren't into cheese steaks. Not into veggies or steak? Steaks on South has impressive other sandwiches like the garlic-studded roast pork and the buffalo chicken cheese steak -- truly something for everyone.
